What Clients Have Said

AZ

Ahmad Zulkifli bin Nordin

Petaling Jaya, Selangor

I came in with a folder of letters I had been putting off reading for two years. By the end of the session I understood exactly what had happened to my pension — a period of contract work had not been credited properly — and what my options were. Everything was explained clearly without rushing me.

Kuala Lumpur (assisting her mother)

My mother was receiving a pension that seemed too low, but she did not want to make a fuss. I attended the consultation session with her. They took their time explaining every document on the table and never made either of us feel we were taking too long. The appeal we filed was settled within three months.

The full review took a little longer than I hoped — closer to seven months in the end — but I was kept informed throughout. What I found valuable was that they told me upfront which parts of my claim were strong and which were less certain. I appreciated that honesty more than I expected to at the time.

I used the video appointment option as I live some distance from the city centre. It worked without any difficulty. The adviser called before the session to explain what to have ready. My daughter joined from a separate location. All three of us could follow what was being explained without any problem.

Tan Kim Hock

Ampang, Selangor

My former employer had closed down, and I was not certain whether my EPF contributions from that period had been recorded. Tiang Amanah traced the records and confirmed most of them were intact — and identified one quarter that had not been credited. They handled all the correspondence to have it corrected.

I was told by a different adviser that my appeal would probably not succeed and was advised not to proceed. Tiang Amanah reviewed the same documents and gave me a different, more nuanced assessment. The appeal did not fully succeed, but a partial adjustment was made. I felt the process was handled with care throughout.

Three Matters in Detail

These accounts have been condensed and any identifying details changed. They illustrate the kinds of matters we handle and how they typically unfold.

A Public Sector Retiree with an Unexplained Deduction

The Situation

A retired civil servant had been receiving a monthly pension that was noticeably lower than expected. The letter from the relevant authority referred to a deduction applied under a provision that was not explained in plain language. The client had not disputed it, partly because the letter seemed final and partly because she was not sure where to begin.

What We Did

We reviewed the scheme rules that applied at the time of retirement, identified the provision cited, and found that it had been applied to a period of service that fell outside its scope. A written submission was prepared setting out the error and requesting a recalculation, supported by the client's service record.

The Outcome

The authority agreed that the deduction had been applied incorrectly to a portion of the service period. The monthly payment was revised upward and a retrospective adjustment was made for the period since retirement. The matter concluded in approximately five months from the initial consultation.

An EPF Member with a Gap in Contributions

The Situation

A man who had worked for several employers over a thirty-year career noticed that his EPF statement showed a gap of nearly two years. He believed he had been employed continuously during that period and that his former employer had been making contributions throughout.

What We Did

We traced the employer from records held at the Companies Commission and obtained payroll records for the period in question through correspondence with the company's current successor entity. The records confirmed that contributions had been deducted from wages but not remitted to EPF.

The Outcome

EPF confirmed the missing contributions and credited them to the client's account with accumulated dividends. The matter required persistent follow-up over approximately six months given the number of entities involved, but the client received a written update at each stage and did not need to contact any authority himself.

A Family Seeking Clarity Before Making Any Decision

The Situation

An adult daughter had noticed that her mother's pension payments seemed inconsistent from month to month. The mother was reluctant to make a formal complaint and was worried about losing what she was already receiving. The family wanted to understand the situation before deciding anything.

What We Did

The family used our consultation session, with the daughter joining from a different city by video. We reviewed the payment records and the relevant scheme rules, and explained what the variation in amounts was likely to reflect. We also set out what a formal enquiry would involve and what risk, if any, it would carry.

The Outcome

The family decided, on the basis of the session, that no formal action was needed — the variations reflected a cost-of-living indexation mechanism that had not been explained to the client when she retired. They left with a clear written summary and the knowledge that no entitlement had been lost. No further work was required.
